BEVERLY - Roger N. Gartrell, 71, of Beverly, Ohio, died Thursday (May 12, 2011) at Marietta Memorial Hospital in Marietta. He was born July 9, 1939, in New Philadelphia, Ohio, the son of E. Noel and Gertrude L. Walker Gartrell.
He had owned and operated Roger's Restaurant in Beverly for 32 years. He had been a former sanitarian for Pima County Health Department in Tuscan, Ariz. and was a master house painter for many years. He graduated from McKinley High School in 1957 and the University of Arizona in 1972. He was a member of the Beverly United Methodist Church. He loved to dance and sing karaoke. He was an avid sports fan and loved the Cleveland Indians and the Arizona Wildcats. He was also the voice of the Fort Frye Cadets for many years and was a former little league coach.
He was married June 25, 1961, to Mary Lou Buehler Gartrell. He is survived by his wife; one son, Jeff Gartrell and his wife, Tina, of Beverly; two daughters, Jill Scott of Marietta, and Julie LaVaglio and husband, Michael, of Palm Coast, Fla,; five grandchildren, Matthew Scott, Lindsey Scott, Micayla LaVaglio, Angelina LaVaglio and Luke Gartrell; three sisters, Marilyn Fouss and husband, Howard, of Beverly, Carolyn Sue Lower and husband, Bruce, of Clarkesville, Ga., and Shirley Harper of Cambridge, Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday (May 17, 2011) at the Beverly United Methodist Church with Pastor Jeff Corbett officiating. Burial will be in Beverly Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., Monday, at McCurdy Funeral Home in Beverly and one hour before the service at the church.
