John Harvey Brown lived for eighty-nine years. He died in Whittier, CA on Monday, May 9, 2011. He died of pneumonia, respiratory failure, and Alzheimer's Disease. He died in his sleep.

John was born December 25, 1921 in Tulsa, OK. He was a child of John Harvey Brown and Ida Grace Brown. He had three older siblings: Harold Brown, Vera Brown, and Zola Brown who are all deceased. He grew up in Tulsa, OK. His sister Vera had a daughter who was near his age named Carol Silvus, and they grew up together like siblings. Carol fondly remembers the times that John chased her around the block when they were growing up.

He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Journalism from The University of Oklahoma and a Master's degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. He served in the US Army during World War II. He married Barbara Pearl Bradfield in Austin, TX on June 25, 1949. They moved to New York City. As opportunities grew in the West, he moved to the Los Angeles area, where he remained for the rest of his life.

Over the course of his career, John worked at US Steel, North-American Rockwell, and Occidental Life, which later became TransAmerica. He worked as a systems analyst, a senior systems analyst and as an executive and project manager. He worked with computers when they were first being developed, and throughout his career.

In his 40s, John became an avid runner, a sport he continued well into his seventies and eighties. He was a member of Toastmasters and enjoyed extemporaneous speaking. John was known for being kind, sincere, and for having a wonderful sense of humor.

John is survived by his wife, Barbara Bradfield Brown, 90 (Whittier, CA); his son Douglas Gregory Brown and Doug's wife Nancy Wenger Brown, (Playa del Rey, CA); and his daughter Barbara Jeanette Brown, (Menlo Park, CA). He is also survived by his three grandchildren: Jefferson Bradfield Packer, 20 (Davis, CA); Jordan Rose Packer, 15 (Menlo Park, CA); and Tanner Austin Brown, 1 (Playa del Rey).
