Born about 1843-44 near Leesburg, Southampton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; youngest child of Harmon Hillsberry. Catherine moved in 1853--with her father and siblings--to East Bend Township, Champaign County, Illinois, where her father purchased land in 1853 and 1855. She was enumerated on her father's farm in the 1860 census.
Catherine "Hilberry" and Charles Knell were married on 9 April 1862 in Champaign County. He served in an Illinois regiment in 1865, farmed in East Bend Township, and died in December 1878, leaving his widow with their six children. In 1900, "Kate" Knell was enumerated as an inmate at the Champaign County Poor Farm in Urbana. She died in early 1903; her death certificate was issued on 3 February 1903.
Her mother's identity remains unknown.
