| Birth: | unknown Missouri, USA | | Death: | Jan. 16, 1919 Flagstaff Coconino County Arizona, USA | Pioneer of the Grand Canyon. When he arrived in 1883 he became probably the first white man to settle there. He created many trails and the Hance Rapids on the Colorado River are named after him. The 'Captain' was a courtesy title which this character and raconteur adopted for himself - one contemporary visitor wrote 'To see the canyon only, and not to see Captain John Hance, is to miss half the show'.
