1909 - 1983
Leonard H. "Tom" Arvig is the oldest son of Thomas L. Arvig and Mildred M. (Oliver) Arvig, born March 1, 1909 in Crow Wing County, Minnesota.
Tom Arvig married Marie E Stundebeck, daughter of Fred H. and Elizabeth (Rehkamp) Stundebeck.
In June 1928, Mrs Mildred (Oliver) Arvig and her son Leonard H. "Tom" Arvig purchased the local Melrose telephone company from the Kraker brothers. They ran the company as a team / family business until 1940 when Marie Arvig sold the business to her oldest son, L.H. "Tom" Arvig.
Tom Arvig continued to run the Melrose Telephone Company until his death in 1983. His mother Marie Arvig passed away in 1965.
A younger brother, Carroll C. Arvig, was trained in the company business in Melrose. In 1948, after completing training and working for the company, he purchased the Twin Valley-Ulen Telephone Company servicing the Twin Valley area of Norman County in northwest Minnesota. Carroll passed away in 1962 and the company was run by his widow, the former Bernice Tembrock of Melrose, Minn.
The third brother in the family business, Royal B Arvig, was also trained in Melrose and then founded the East-Ottertail Telephone Company based in Perham, Minn, servicing the area around Ottertail county. Royal Arvig died April 1975 and is buried in Perham Cemetery, Ottertail County, Minn.
