| Birth: | Nov. 19, 1924 | | Death: | Nov. 15, 1998 |  Gospel Singer and Songwriter. Born in Lakeland, Florida, J.D. became inspired to sing after hearing Frank Stamps perform. He served in the U.S. military during World War II. After his discharge, he formed group the "The Sunny Side Boys." J.D. also sang with Elvis Presley as backup along with "The Sunshine Boys," "The BlackWood Quartet," and "J.D. Sumner and the Stamps." J.D.'s voice earned him a Grammy, a spot in the GMA Hall of Fame and in the Guiness Book of World Records for the lowest bass voice. In his later years he enjoyed performing at the Gaither Homecoming concerts. He will always be remembered for his unique low voice, and his great sense of humor.
