(KS) Belleville Telescope Dec. 14, 1950

John B. West, youngest son of John Balanger and Alice L. West, was born May 3, 1929, near Haddam, and departed this life December 8, 1950, at Nemaha, Neb., at the age of 21 years, 7 months and 5 days.
West attended Arlington rural school and was graduated from Haddam Rural High School in 1947. He enlisted in the Army and after training in the states, he was sent to Germany where he served several months with the Army of Occupation. March 6, 1950, he returned to this country. Since that time he had been employed by the Rhinehardt Construction company and was serving in the capacity of head mechanic of the company's equipment. He loved his work and was happy in his chosen occupation.
West met his death about 11 o'clock Friday morning in a automobile accident. He had been working at Nemaha, Neb.
Ben, as he was known to everyone, was a lover of the great out-of-doors and the beauties of nature. He had expressed his love for the better things of life in a small volume of poems he had written and presented to his mother before leaving for overseas duty. Ben possessed a happy, care-free disposition and was a loving son, always giving a kiss and farewell wave of his hand to his mother upon leaving. Since his death, another poem, dedicated to his mother, was found. It was apparently written while he was overseas.
Since Ben never knew his father, who passed away February 15, 1929, the family lived in the E. C. Cornwell home and Ben learned to admire and appreciate Mr. Cornwell's fatherly council. Ben seemed to have his father's trait of making friends wherever he went.
He expressed his faith in the Heavenly Father and was baptized and became a member of the Haddam Methodist church on April 25, 1946.
He leaves to mourn his passing, his mother; six sisters, Mrs. Clara Goodrich of Wichita, Mrs. Olive Stephens of Redmond, Ore., Mrs. Margaret Kirkpatrick of Haddam, Mrs. Vera Jennings of Louisville, Ky., Ruth and Ruby West of Haddam; one brother, Joseph C. West of Haddam; three half-brothers, Floyd of Haddam, Lloyd of Venice, Cal., Chester of Otis, Colo.; one half-sister, Mrs. Mildred Koch of Herkimer; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and many friends.
Funeral services were held Monday, December 11, at the Haddam Methodist church, conducted by the Rev. J. Holland Vernon. Interment was in Haddam cemetery.
