James D. Anderson, was born in Indiana in 1842. He married Anna (Amanda A) Kennel on June 5, 1867, in Albia, Monroe Co., Iowa. Children from this union were Murle, A., Edna L., and Beulah A. (adopted)*

James D. Anderson was a civil war veteran. Although James Anderson was from the South, he fought on the side of the North during the Civil War. He had at least one brother who fought for the South. James reported to the Kansas department of the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) in 1885, Leon Post, Leon, Butler Co., Kansas.

James and Amanda lived in Albia, Monroe Co., Kansas for a number of years. By 1895, they had moved to Butler Co., Kansas. Fifteen years later, James and Anna had moved to California and were living with his daughter and son-in-law Walter and Edna Ripple in Los Angeles (Assembly District 70), California. By 1923, James and Amanda were living in Hawthorne, California. James was a Saddler working in the saddle industry.

James passed away on January 18, 1929, in Hawthorne, California. Services were held for James D. Anderson in the chapel at the Gilliland Funeral Home, 441 N. Hawthorne Blvd., Hawthorne, California, Rev. Loren Howe preaching the sermon. Two solos were sung by Miss Clara Wilbanks. Chas. E. Van Der Oef, commander of the U. V. R. conducted the service for the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic). Internment was in the G.A.R. plot in Inglewood cemetery, Inglewood, California. (Los Angeles Herald Newspaper)

He enlisted with Company F, 8th Iowa Cavalry on 1 Jun 1863 from his home in Albia, Monroe County, Iowa. He was discharged on 13 Aug 1865 at Macon, GA. He filed for an invalid pension (#811302) on 23 Sep 1879. His widow filed for a pension (#1633934) on 1 Feb 1929.
