Notes from Piatt Co Republican, Mar 15, 1928
David Benson of White Heath, was almost instantly killed Mondaoy afternoon in Lodge on the IL Central track by a freight which runs between Clinton and Champaign. The accident happened about 3:30 p.m.
A coroner's inquest was held and the testimony offered by the engineer and fireman on the train showed that a man stepped out from between cars parked on a side track. A whistle was blown and the man did not pay attention, the engineer applied the emergency brakes and whistled sharply. The man was knocked about 20 feet; he was picked up and placed in the caboose and taken to White Heath to a physician but he died in about 10 minutes. The testimony showed that Mr. Benson was deaf and was unable to hear the first whistle.
The coroner's jury returned a verdict that he came to his death by being hit by the engine and that the accident was unavoidable.
David Buchanan Benson was born in Yale, Jasper, Illinois on January 15, 1858. He was the s/o John and Jane Hosler Benson. He had resided in this vicinity for about 30 years. He leaves his wife, several children and other relatives to mourn him.
Funeral services were conducted at the M. E. Church in White Heath with interment in Ingram Cemetery.
