Lois (Gunden) Clemens‚ 90‚ died August 27‚ 2005 in Dock Terrace in Towamencin. She was the wife of Ernest Rittenhouse Clemens‚ who died in 1997. After their marriage in 1958 they resided in Lansdale until moving to Dock Gardens in 1991.
She is survived by her stepdaughter‚ Pauline C. Fisher and her husband‚ John J.‚ of Goshen‚ IN and their daughters‚ Susan F. Miller of Evanston‚ IL and Margaret F. Aeschliman of Salem‚ OR; great-grandsons‚ Peter‚ Christopher and John Miller‚ and Spencer and Stuart Aeschliman; brothers‚ Elton A.‚ of Naples FL and Donald E. Gunden of Myerstown; and sisters‚ Doris Metzler and Ruth E. Goshen.
She was preceded in death by her sister‚ Elva Huneryager; and brothers‚ Orville J.‚ Ralph J. and Cleland.
Born Feb. 25‚ 1915 in Flanagan‚ IL‚ she was the daughter of the late Christian J. and Agnes (Albrecht) Gunden. She graduated from Goshen College in 1936. She received her master's degree from Peabody College in 1939 and doctorate from Indiana University in 1958 in French.
Her teaching career included Goshen College from 1939 to 1958 and Temple University from 1965 to 1975‚ as well as North Penn High School in Lansdale. She served as the first president of the local chapter of the Association of University Women‚ and for many years was active in the American Bible Society‚ including membership on Advisory Council.
Much of her life was devoted to the service of the church. In the 1941 she went to southern France for the Mennonite Central Committee to administer a refugee children's home‚ and in 1943 was interned in Germany before being repatriated in 1944. At Plains Mennonite Church near Lansdale‚ she was actively engaged as a leader in youth and women's activities‚ as a Sunday school teacher‚ and for two successive terms as an elder. She served the Franconia Mennonite Conference in a number of positions‚ including being chair of the International Friendship Committee‚ in that capacity opening her home for English lessons and making friends with newly arrived immigrants.
For the Mennonite Church at large‚ she served on its General Committee‚ Board of Education‚ and for two terms on the Board of Overseers for Goshen College. She was editor of The Voice‚ the national publication of the Women's Missionary and Service Auxiliary of the Mennonite Board of Missions and authored the book‚ Women Liberated‚ a pioneering biblical study of women's distinctive service in the home‚ church and community.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service Wednesday‚ Aug. 31 at 2 P.M. in the Dock Woods Community Chapel‚ 275 Dock Drive‚ Lansdale. The family will receive friends in the chapel prior to the service between 1 and 2 P.M. Interment‚ Plains Mennonite Cemetery.
