Lawrence started selling subscriptions to the Catholic Universe Bulletin door-to-door in 1928. Soon after he was named circulation manager and he held that job until 1971 when he retired. He graduated from St. Ignatius High School, Cleveland, John Carroll University, and received a law degree from John Marshall Law School. Lawrence helped to establish the clothing bureau at St. John Nepomucene Catholic Church through the St. Vincent DePaul Society. He was the first President of their Holy Name Society in 1928.
