Frank J. Hayes Jr., 85, of Highlands, formerly of Tamarac, Fla., passed away Friday, Dec. 19, 2008.
He was born June 4, 1923, in Staten Island, N.Y. He was the son of the late Frank Joseph Hayes Sr. and Jennie Wood Hayes. He was married to the late Mary Crunkleton Hayes, who died July 7, 2008.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a retired police officer with the New York Police Department with 20 years of service, and worked for JC Penney's for 15 years. He was a Past Grand Knight of Assumption Council. Frank was a member of Gold Star Post of American Legion and a member of the VFW. His greatest joy was golfing and fishing with his grandchildren. He was a member and parishioner of the Holy Family Catholic Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Kathleen Castella and husband Richard of Frisco, Texas, and Mary Brooks and husband William; two sons, Frank Hayes III and wife Julia and John Hayes and wife Maggie, all of Staten Island, N.Y.; a brother-in-law to Mildred Kessler and Lydia Langell; grandchildren, Frank
Hayes IV, Catherine Hayes, Joey, Justin and Matthew Hayes, Katlyn, Ricky and Jesse Castella, and Billy, Travis, Austin and Casey Brooks.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Abbott; and a granddaughter, Annie Castella.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 22, at Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church, with Father Dean Cesa officiating.
Burial was at the Miller Cemetery. His grandsons served as pallbearers.
The family received friends from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 21, at Bryant-Grant Funeral Home in Highlands.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Highlands Biological Station, Highlands.
Bryant-Grant Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
