WESSEL , Gerald 'Jerry' B. Wessel, 66, Effingham, KS passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2006 at St. Francis Health Center in Topeka, KS.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Saturday, May 13, 2006 at St. Ann's Church in Effingham with Rev. Benjamin Tremmel. O.S.B. celebrant. Burial at St. Ann's Cemetery. A parish rosary will be said at 7:00 PM Friday, at St. Ann's Church with visitation following till 8:30 PM. O'Trimble Funeral Home, Effingham, KS is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Ann's Church or the Atchison County Rural Fire District #2 and left in care of O'Trimble Funeral Home.
Mr. Wessel was born September 2, 1939 near Kelly, KS the son of Joseph and Freda (Niehues) Wessel, Sr. He attended St. Ann's Grade School and was a 1957 graduate of ACCHS. He was a school bus driver from 1960 to 1962 for ACCHS and worked for the Benton Township. Jerry was a farmer and he helped organize the Atchison County Rural Fire District #2 in 1968. He served as a Board Member for 25 years while continuing to volunteer with the fire department. He was a life long member of St. Ann's Church and later served on the Church Committee and Parish Counsel. Jerry enjoyed watching his grandsons play sports, hunting, playing cards and loved being with family and friends.
Jerry married Alice M. Wohletz on February 4, 1961 at St. Ann's Church. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include his daughters Theresa Cattrell and her husband Gary of Nortonville; and Margaret Diehl and her husband Bruce of Wichita; and a son Mike Wessel of Effingham. 3 grandsons Jason and Randy Cattrell of Nortonville and Kevin Diehl of Wichita. 1 great grandson Ryan Cattrell of Nortonville. Sister Florence Edwards; brothers Joseph Wessel, Jr.; and Leander Wessel all of Effingham and Tom Wessel of Ft. Worth, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother Vincent Wessel.
