Helinsky Rites to Be Friday
Was Veteran of Two U.S. Wars
Funeral services for William P. Helinsky, 78, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, with a requiem high mass in St. Patrick's church, Estherville. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery in Estherville. The Rev. R. J. Calkins will conduct the funeral services. The rosary will be recited at the Sternborg Funeral home at 8 p.m. Thursday. Full military rites will be held with Estherville VFW in charge.
Mr. Helinsky, long time Estherville resident and one of two remaining Spanish American war veterans living in Estherville, died in the veteran's hospital at Sioux Falls Monday [December 5, 1949] morning. He had been hospitalized for about six weeks. Death was attributed to heart trouble, kidney disease and other ailments.
Survivors include four daughters, Sister Mary Rosalie, Omaha; Sister Rose Marie, Chicago; Mrs. Ed Cogger, Minneapolis, and Mrs. W. H. Mason, Estherville; and three sons, Mike Helinsky, Anoka, Minn.; Lawrence, Anoka, Minn.; and J. F. Helinsky, Bancroft.
Mr. Helinsky was born in Chicago in 1871. He attended schools in Chicago and Wilbert, Minn. In 1894 he was married to Mary Landsteiner [Her obituary gives maiden name as Zupher] of New Ulm, Minn. She preceded him in death.
He had worked in Fairmont and Estherville, coming to Estherville in 1905. He was a stationary engineer most of his life.
In addition to serving in the Spanish-American war, he served 18 months in Germany during World War I with the U.S. Army aviation corps. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, December 6, 1949)
