On 1 Aug 1861 Joseph mustered into service with Company A of the 15th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, being credited to the quota of Lancaster, Massachusetts. He was 18 years and 9 days old.

He was taken prisoner on 21 Oct 1861 at The Battle of Ball's Bluff, Leesburg, Virginia. He was listed amont the missing and prisoners in "The Worcester Spy." And on 20 Nov 1861 he was listed as a prisoner at Richmond.

In Jun 1862 in "The New York Times," he was listed among the released prisoners brought to the port on board the U. S. transport Guide from Newbern, N. C.

On 31 Aug 1862 his brother, Albert Mordough Kingsbury, died of wounds received in battle while serving with Co D, 22nd Regt. Massachusetts Vols at age 17.

On 27 Nov 1862 he ended military service with the 15th Massachusetts by mustering out at Alexandria, Virginia, due to disability.

On 8 Jan 1867 Joseph Warren Kingsbury, 23, married Mary E. Merritt, daughter of William H. and ESther Merritt, at Newburyport, Massachusetts, in a first marriage for both.

Joseph Warren Kingsbury died on 23 Jan 1875 at Amesbury, Massachusetts. He was 31 years and 6 months old.

(Note: Joseph and his brother, Albert, Kingsbury are both listed in plot 983 of the Union Cemetary records, however, the only Kingsbury monument in that plot has their parents and siblings names, not theirs, according to contributor #47447829)
