United States Navy Admiral. He was Chief of Naval Operations from August 16, 1951 until August 17, 1953. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1916 and served in the Atlantic during World War I. He commanded the battleship Indiana in the Pacific from 1942 to 1944 and was the commander of Amphibious Group 8 of the Seventh Fleet in the Pacific from August 1944 to March 1945, participating in the landings at Morotai, Leyte and Lingayen in the Philippines. He was then Assistant Chief of Naval Personnel and later, Commander, Battleships and Cruisers, Atlantic Fleet. He was Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Personnel from 1947 to 1950 and Commander-In-Chief, Atlantic from February 1950 to August 1951. He was Chief of Naval Operations during most the Korean War. He was Commander-In-Chief, Allied Forces, Southern Europe from August 1953 until his retirement in July 1956.
