Mrs. Relief McLaughlen [sic] is Called By Death
Relief Elizabeth Bonham, daughter of William and Amanda Bonham, pioneer residents of Sparland, was born January 8, 1850, and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dottie Dunbar, in La Prairie, September 13, 1940, at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 7 days.
She was united in marriage to Geo. W. McLaughlen, August 19, 1870. To this union 12 children were born, four of whom died in infancy. Her husband also preceded her in death 34 years ago. She remained on the home farm and with the help of the older children raised the family. Mrs. McLaughlen was baptized and joined the church in her young girlhood and later became a member of the Sparland Baptist Church, to which she was devoted many years. She was a devoted wife and mother, and was respected and loved by all who knew her. She had a serious sick spell last spring, and had never fully recovered, but was able to visit among her children, and at the time she was so seriously taken sick Friday she was spending a few days with her daughter. She passed into unconsciousness within an hour and never rallied, passing away at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
She leaves to mourn her departure, four sons and three daughters, Oscar M. and George of Chillicothe, Albert L. and Clyde C. of Sparland, Mrs. A.L. Auth of Peoria, Mrs. Chas. Donath of near Chillicothe and Mrs. Dottie Dunbar of La Prairie. One daughter, Mary Jeanette Harvey, passed away 19 years ago, leaving an infant daughter Verna May, now Mrs. George Cleveland, to whom Mrs. McLaughlen gave a mother's tender love. Others left to mourn include 48 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren, three brothers, Henry and Leonard Bonham of St. Louis, Mo., and Clifford Bonham of White Bear Lake, Minn.; one sister, Mrs. Mamie McLaughlen of Baggs, Wyo., and many other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Chillicothe at the Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Mrs. Raycroft. Many beautiful flowers surrounded the casket. The pall bearers were grandsons, viz., Walter McLaughlen, Glenn and Leland Donath, Wm. Auth, Edwin Dunbar and George McLaughlen, Jr. Interment was at Yankee Street cemetery beside other loved ones. There was a large attendance of relatives and friends from Sparland and surrounding country.
