Served in many posts including, Member of the Iowa State House of Representatives (1865-1867), Member of the Iowa State Senate (1867-1871), Justice of the Dakota Territorial Supreme Court (1875-1878) and Delegate to the United States Congress from Dakota Territory (1879-1881). Also served in the Union Army during the Civil War (1861-1865).
