| Birth: | 1911 | | Death: | Jan. 7, 1996 | Okamoto was one of Japan's most famous sculptors. His most famous accomplishment is the giant Sun Tower built for Expo '70 in Osaka. It still stands in the Expo '70 Commemoration Park. The Sun Tower is considered a class work of art and which prompted many people to develop an interest in his work. Okamoto was also an avid photographer and is considered Japan's foremost avant-garde artist. Okamoto led Japan's postwar abstract art movement, arguing that art should not be "comfortable." He studied in Paris for 11 years during which time he joined forces with Kandinsky and other European abstract artists. He returned to Japan in 1940 and once said "I returned to Japan to become anti-Japanese." A Memorial Museum was established in his honor in Kanagawa Prefecture. (bio by: Warrick L. Barrett)
