John Burch's Obituary, below, appeared in the Times - Journal newspaper in Eastman, GA Thursday, May 12, 1921.
Dr. J. A. Burch died at the home of his parents, Judge and Mrs. M. L. Burch, of this city, on Friday morning last about 3 o'clock, after an illness of only three or four days of toxemia, induced by a complication of kidney and bladder troubles.
Funeral services were conducted at the home Friday afternoon at 4 o'clock by Rev. W. A. Duncan of the Baptist Church, after which the body was taken in charge by the Eastman Lodge of Masons an interred with the honors of that order. Dr. J. D. Herrman, Dr. Ferdinand Herrman, Dr. J. B. Clark, Dr. A. L. Wilkens, Dr. J. C. Wall and Dr. W. Coleman acted as pallbearers.
Dr. Burch was born on the 5th of May, 1881, and was within a few days of being forty years old. He graduated from the Atlanta College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1910, after which he practiced medicine at Chester for a number of years, moving from that place to Eastman and resuming his practice here. He was endowed with extremely admirable personal qualities, with a kindly spirit to all humanity, especially those in poverty or misfortune, and his ministrations have been an actual aid and blessing to large numbers of people throughout the county.
A letter to the Times - Journal from one of his patients expresses in a large measure the esteem in which he was held by those to whom he ministered. It says: "He was a highly beloved citizen and physician; he was always kind to every one with whom he came in contact, and was the most successful doctor we ever knew. He is more than missed by the country, as well as the city in which he made his home."
Dr. Burch was the elder son of Judge and Mrs. M. L. Burch, of this city, and a member of one of the largest and most prominent families in this section of the state. His personal popularity extended wherever he was known, and friends and relatives from all parts of Dodge county and also from Telfair and Laurens were in attendance at his funeral to pay their last tribute of love and esteem.
He is survived by his parents and one brother and five sisters. The brother is Mr. Mike Burch of this city, and the sisters are Miss Mary Lou Burch, Mrs. B. L. Harrell and Miss Annie Burch, of Eastman; Mrs. W. W. Evans of Halcyondale, and Mrs. R. W. Selman, of Gainsville.
