| Birth: | Jan. 1, 1747 Morristown Morris County New Jersey, USA | | Death: | Jul. 21, 1824 Providence Providence County Rhode Island, USA |  Continental Congressman. Born in Morristown, New Jersey, he was a 1766 graduate of Princeton College, and was admitted to the bar two years later. He commenced a practice in Providence, Rhode Island, and became a professor at Brown University, a post he held from 1769 until 1779. He then served in a number of judicial posts until he was elected as a Delegate from Rhode Island to the Continental Congress, serving from 1782 to 1785. After that Congressional term was over he continued in the duel fields of education and the Judiciary, serving as an Associate Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court, a Rhode Island District Attorney and as acting president of Brown University. In 1812 he was appointed as a judge of the United States District Court for Rhode Island, which he held until his death in Providence, Rhode Island in 1824.
