U.S. Senator. Born in Dedham, Massachusetts, he graduated from Yale University in 1868, from the law department of Columbia College New York, in 1870, was admitted to the bar in 1871 and commenced to practice law in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to Rhode Island, in 1875 and practiced law in Providence. He was a member of the Rhode Island State House of Representatives (1879-81), appointed by President James Garfield a United States district judge for the first judicial district, serving (1881-84), when he was appointed by President Chester Arthur a presiding judge of the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the first circuit. In 1913, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served until his death at age 78. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
