John and Count Gleghorn killed by an African American, Squire Smith yesterday morning. One of the most dastardly crimes which ever shocked the people of this section occured yesterday morning about nine o'clock when Squire Smith, shot and killed John and Count Gleghorn, two well to do white men, where they were clearing land on their farm six miles east of this city, just beyond the county line in Nevada county. He then made this escape and up to the timne of this paper going to press, had not been captured. The trouble arose about a hunting dog, but the exact particulars of the tragedy have not been learned. Smith shot John Gleghorn the older brother, first, then shot Count. The latter died at once, but John was shot over the heart, and Count through the right lung, the weapon used being a pistol of large caliber. Dr. G H Martindale was called to the Gleghorn farm to attend the wounded man, but he died before the doctor could get there. John Gleghorn was about 32 years of age, and has a wife and child. Count Gleghorn lived with his brother and was about 21 years old and unmarried. They are cousins of Count Gleghorn of this City.
Smith, is 30 years old, and has a bad reputation. He is believed to be hiding in the creek bottoms near the scene of the crime, and it is anticipated that he will show fight when found. The sheriff of Nevada County with a posse, is searching for him. Several men from this city spent yesterday afternoon assisting in the search.
