Samuel McClary Fite
Birth: Jun. 12, 1816
Death: Oct. 23, 1875
Hot Springs
Garland County
Arkansas, USA

US Congressman. Elected as a Democrat to represent Tennessee's 4th District in the Forty-fourth Congress, he served for seven months, from March 1875 until his death in office. Born near Alexandria in Smith County, he graduated from Tennessee's Clinton College, studied law, and settled as a practicing attorney in Carthage. He was a member of the State Senate (1850), a presidential elector on the Whig ticket (1852), and a judge of Sixth Judicial District (1858 to 1861, 1869 to 1874). When the latter court was suspended during the Civil War he returned to private law practice. Fite won a special 1875 election to the US House of Representatives to fill the vacancy caused by the death of John W. Head, but his own health had been failing for years and he died in an Arkansas sanitarium before Congress assembled. Originally buried at his hometown's Carthage Cemetery, he was reinterred at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Nashville in 1908. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
