Nicknamed "The Louisville Plumber" because of his former trade, he gained considerable prominence on July 3, 1905, at Reno, Nevada, when he defeated Jack Root to become the World Heavy Weight Champion. After one successful exhibition match, he lost his championship to Tommy Burns on February 23, 1906, in Los Angeles, California.
