| Birth: | Dec. 16, 1485 | | Death: | Jan. 7, 1536 | British Monarch. Youngest surviving daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella of Spain and first wife of King Henry VIII. She was sent to England to marry Arthur, the frail Prince of Wales, in 1501 at the age of 16. She was widowed less than six months later. She then married Arthur's younger brother Henry shortly after his coronation in 1509. After several pregnancies, the only surviving child was the Princess Mary. Henry broke from the church of Rome and had the marriage annulled in 1533. Katharine was forced to renounce her title as Queen and instead take the title of Princess Dowager of Wales, a title she refused to acknowledge. She grew increasingly pious, and spent much of her time in prayer. She died at Kimbolton Castle at the age of 50. Henry did not attend the funeral, and did not permit their daughter to attend.
