U.S. Congressman. Graduating from Yale College in 1785, he moved to New York, in 1790, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1791 and commenced the practice of law in Lansingburg, New York. He was president of the Farmersí Bank of Troy, from its foundation in 1801, director-founder of the Rensselaer & Saratoga Insurance Company in 1814, a member of the New York State Assembly, (1816-17) and the first president of the Troy Lyceum of Natural History, in 1818. In 1819, he was elected as a Federalist to the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Congresses, serving until 1823. After his term he was one of the original trustees of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, (1824-25). In 1827, he was elected as an Adams candidate to the Twentieth Congress and reelected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-first Congress, serving until 1831. After his term, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 74. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
