He began his career in the theatre in the late 1920s, performed on Broadway and made his first film appearance in "The Great Garrick" (1937). He spent the rest of his acting career in the cinema and was featured in some seventy films into the 1960s. Some of his memorable roles were in "Dr. Cyclops" (1940), "Wake Island" (1942), "The Killers" (1946), "The Silver Chalice" (1954), "East of Eden" (1955) and "The Wild Bunch" (1969).
