Bruno Richard Hauptmann
Birth: Nov. 26, 1899, Germany
Death: Apr. 3, 1936
Trenton
Mercer County
New Jersey, USA

Bruno Hauptmann was born in Germany in 1899. He entered America illegaly in 1923 and found work as a carpenter. On September 15, 1934, he was arrested and charged with the murder of Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. (the son of the famous airman), who had been kidnapped and murdered in March of 1932. At the time of his arrest Hauptmann was in possesion of nearly $4,000 of the marked Lindbergh ransom money. He proclaimed his innocence but at trial the prosecution put forth some very damaging evidence against him including a handwriting expert who testified that Hauptmann had written the ransom notes and a notebook in which Hauptmann had made a drawing of a ladder similar to the one found on the Lindbergh estate the night of the kidnapping. Several other witnesses testified to seeing Hauptmann on or around the Lindbergh property the night the child was taken. It took the jury several hours to decide that the prosecution had proved its case and found Hauptmann guilty of murder on Febuary 13,1935. They made no recommendation for mercy so under the law the judge had no other choice. Judge Trenchard sentenced Bruno Hauptmann to die in the electic chair. The Trial of the Century was over. Hauptmann continued to protest his innocence but to no avail. On April 3,1936 he died in the electric chair at Trenton State Prison in New Jersey. Today peope still refer to the Lindbergh kidnapping as The Crime Of The Century and to Hauptmann's trial as The Trial Of The Century. Hauptmann's wife Anna continued to try to clear his name until her death in 1994. Whether or not Bruno Hauptmann killed the Lindbergh baby is a secret that only he knows...and he took the secret with him when he died. (bio by: Candy Taylor)
