Left Louisville in 1835 for Springfield IL, where he befriended Lincoln, became a merchant and worked as a newspaper editor. During Civil War, served as Lincoln's western affairs adviser. Lincoln offered Speed Secretary of Treasury position several times, but he declined each. Lincoln visited Speed family plantation, Farmington, in Louisville, for six weeks in 1841. Farmington believe based on a design by Thomas Jefferson. Lincoln appointed James Speed, brother of Joshua, Attorney General in December 1864. James also buried Cave Hill.
