My dad was born in Nantyglo, Monmouthshire, the youngest son of Tom and Maggie Lovett. At the age of 5 he had pneumonia and wasn't expected to live but he pulled through. The area he grew up in during the 1920's was one of the poorest in Britain, at the age of 9 he was sent to Pendine Sands with other malnourished boys from the town, paid for by Quakers from London. At age 15 he had to leave home and go to Worcester to look for work, he was only away a year before he returned. He joined the army at the start of the war in 1939 and served until 1945 when he was discharged unfit for service due to injuries received. He served in France and Belgium during that time. Whilst in Belgium in 1945 he met Adrienne, she travelled to Wales in Dec 1946 and they married 1st Feb. 1947. They had 7 children together. Dad worked hard and made sure we all had what he called the 3 essentials, food in our belly, clothes on our back and a roof over our head. He suffered with cancer for the last few years of his life but never complained. Nothing made him happier than seeing his grandchildren laughing.
