Born Lloyd Colteryahn, he attended Brentwood High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and played collegiate football at the University of Maryland. While with the Terrapins he experienced a Bowl Game title, as Maryland defeated Tennessee 28 to 13 in the Sugar Bowl (1952) and was a member of their 1953 National Championship squad. Selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 4th round of the 1953 NFL Draft, he signed with the Baltimore Colts and played for three seasons (!954 to 1956) in the National Football League at the offensive-end position. He appeared in 27 career games and enjoyed his most productive season during his rookie year (1954), as he recorded a career-high 30 receptions for 384 yards.
