Lewis Whitaker Adams was the son of Zala and Adeline Whitaker Adams. He was a member of the Eastern Band of Cherokee. He was married to May Davidson and they were the parents of two children, Thomas and Carol Adams.
Lewis was Dean of Commerce at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia for more than 20 years.
