John Herschell came to America in 1869. He married his sweetheart, Martha Leithch and settled in Spencer, Owen County, Indiana. He got a job with the railroad, which took him and his family to several places in Southern Indiana until he finally settled in Princeton. Together he and Martha had 5 children.
In 1882, Martha passed away. A year later, on November 22, 1883, John married Nellie Peak. They had 2 children.
