He attended grade school in Hibbard and Culver and graduated from Culver High School in the class of 1945 and immediately enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served aboard a mine sweeper in the Pacific.
On Sept. 14, 1948, in Jeffersonville, Vance married Marjorie Mae Caler. Their marriage was blessed with three children: Howard Gene (Toni) from Argos, Boni Mae (Dean) Danner from Wauksha, Wis. and Norman Vance from Hibbard, plus nine grandchildren.
Vance is also survived by two brothers: Virgil Eugene of Spokane, Wash. and Fredrick Vaughn of Ft. Wayne.
Vance worked as an upholsterer for 30 years, becoming very skilled in the trade. He then went to work for McGill Corporation and retired from their Valparaiso plant. Vance enjoyed fishing, rabbit hunting and was a skilled gardener.
