Graveside services for Levi Gritts Sr. will be 3:00 pm. Monday, May 9, 2011, at the Swimmer Cemetery. Officiating will be Reverend L.B. Wildcat. Arrangements have been placed in the care of Green Country Funeral Home. Levi Gritts Sr. was born April 9, 1923 in (Pumpkin Hollow), Tahlequah, Oklahoma to Charles and Ollie (Terrapin) Gritts. He departed this life on May 3, 2011, at the age of 88. Levi attended classes at Sequoyah Training School (now Sequoyah High School). At 17 he falsified his age and enlisted in the United States Navy where he served 20 years. During his enlisted years he served during WWII and the Korean Conflict. Levi served an additional 10 years in the Naval Reserves. After his active service time Levi worked for the Bureau of Indian Affairs for 20 years. Once Levi retired, he enjoyed fishing and playing chauffeur to his grandchildren. He was a great storyteller and would often talk of his service time. Levi would entertain his family with his humor, which will be greatly missed by them all. He loved his children and grandchildren and cherished the time he could spend with them. Levi is preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Ogle) Gritts; sons, Mark Allen Gritts, and Levi Gritts Jr.; parents, Charley and Ollie; and a grandson, Justin Pigeon. He is survived by his four daughters, Sandra Merrill and husband Larry of Gans, OK; Cynthia Humphries of Austin, TX; Karen Ryder of Tahlequah, OK and LuAnn Brown of Wagoner, OK; nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives, friends and loved ones too numerous to mention. Levi will be missed by all who knew him.
