American Diplomat. Served in the United States Army during World War II (1939-1945). United States Ambassador to South Korea, serving in 1971. He received the Presidential Medal of Honor in 1982. Among his accomplishments in politics were, head of the Peace talks in Paris that ended the Vietnam War under President Richard M. Nixon, helped to arrange the cease-fire in Lebanon, the P.L.O.'s withdrawal from that country in 1982 and convinced Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos to go into exile in 1986. (bio by: K)
