| Birth: | Oct. 17, 1799 Bourbon County, USA | | Death: | Jan. 23, 1878 Marshall Calhoun County Michigan, USA |  Adam was born to a slave mother and a white father.He decided to flee north when he found out part of his family was to be sold.They settled in Marshall Michigan in about 1845.In 1847 a "slave catcher" named Troutman came to Marshall to retrieve the Crosswhite family.The Crosswhites refused to leave and they towns people arrested Troutman and his group.The Crosswhites then fled to Canada until Troutman's trial was comple.Ultimately this led to the new "Fugitive Slave Act of 1850".This is also listed as one cause of the Civil War.A historical marker on old U.S 12 marks the spot of this event.
