U.S. Congressman. Born in Moss Point, Mississippi, he graduated from Millsaps College, taught school at Lumberton, Mississippi, (1914-17), studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1917. During World War I, he served as a Sergeant Major in the US Army Quartermaster Corps. After the war, he commenced the practice of law in Pascagoula, Mississippi, in 1919, was Jackson County Attorney (1921-27) and District Attorney of the second district of Mississippi, (1928-33). In 1933, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-third Congress and to the nest nineteen succeeding Congresses, serving until 1973. Not a candidate for reelection, he retired to Pascagoula, Mississippi, until his death at age 90.
