George enlisted with the Iowa Volunteers on 29 August 1862. He served in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry, Company M, along with his cousin William Henry Kimple. Both re enlisted in Feb. 1864. Eli Weagley, George's brother-in-law served in the same company from Sept. 1861. According to the Widow's Pension application filed by Martha he was discharged on Aug. 9, 1865. He died only 6 months later at age 37. The pension application states that his death by "Paralysis" was a result of his military service.
