Graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1908. Promoted to Brigadier General in 1940, Major General in 1941 and Lieutenant General in 1943. In 1944 he organized the Tenth Army, which went into combat in Okinawa in 1945. He was killed by a Japanese artillery shell on June 18, 1945, three days before Okinawa was finally taken.
