Leopold Markbreit
Birth: Mar. 13, 1842
Death: Jul. 27, 1909

Mayor of Cincinnati, Union Civil War Officer, U.S. Minister to Bolivia. A native of Vienna, Austria, his family fled Germany when he was a child after a failed revolution in 1848 and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in Ohio, and entered into a law partnership with future U.S. President, Rutherford B. Hayes. When the Civil War began, he volunteered for service and enlisted in the Union Army as a Sergeant of Company E with the 28th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was soon promoted to Sergeant Major and after the Battle of Carnifex Ferry, he was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant for bravery on the field. He eventually became a Captain and was captured by the Confederate Army while serving under General William Averell while participating in the "Salem Raid" in December, 1863. He was held in Libby Prison for thirteen months and suffered from extreme treatment to which he never fully recovered. His half-brother, U.S. Minister to Ecuador, Frederick Hassaurek, arranged for his liberation on February 5, 1865. After the war, he served on the staff of Ohio Governor Jacob D. Cox and later for Ohio Governor, Rutherford B. Hayes. He was appointed as U.S. Minister to Bolivia in 1869. In 1873, he returned to America and became the secretary and business manager of the Cincinnati Volksblatt Company. Markbreit later served as the Treasurer of the United States in Cincinnati from 1882 to 1886. Sponsored by Cox, he was elected as a Republican as the Mayor of Cincinnati in 1908 and served until his death in 1909. (bio by: K Guy)
