Ernest "Tom" R. Heikkenen, 87, Brainerd, died Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd.

He was born Aug. 28, 1913, in Brainerd to Henry and Hilda (Hill) Heikkenen. He married Alta E. Creger in 1936. He was employed by the Northern Pacific Railroad then the city of Brainerd Street Dept. until his retirement. He was inducted into the Brainerd High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1985. He did volunteer work with the YMCA. He also coached basketball. He was active in the RF Club and the Quarterbacks in Brainerd, as well as in the Moose and Eagles Lodges. In retirement, he served for a short time on the Brainerd City Council.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Paulson and Judy Bertelt, both of Brainerd; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Edna (Heikkenen) Carlson, Brainerd.

His wife, and three brothers, died earlier.

Services will be 1 p.m. Monday at Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd with the Rev. Wesley E. Hart officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd.

Friends may call an hour before services Monday at Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd.

Arrangements are with Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd.
