Manuel Simeon Corley

U.S. Congressman. Born in Lexington, South Carolina, he attended Lexington Academy then engaged in business pursuits in 1838. He opposed the first attempt at secession of South Carolina, from the Union in 1852 and was editor of the South Carolina Temperance Standard newspaper, (1855-56). During the Civil War, he entered the Confederate Army in 1863, was captured by Union forces at Petersburg, Virginia, April 2, 1865 and was released June 5, 1865. After the war, he was a delegate to the constitutional convention of South Carolina in 1867 and upon the readmission of South Carolina to representation, he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress, serving (1867-69). After his term, he was special agent of the United States Treasury in 1869, commissioner of agricultural statistics of South Carolina in 1870 and treasurer of Lexington County in 1874. He died at age 79 in Lexington, South Carolina. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
