| Birth: | Dec. 2, 1809 Nashville Davidson County Tennessee, USA | | Death: | Apr. 24, 1902 Murfreesboro Rutherford County Tennessee, USA |  US Congressman. Elected as a Whig to represent Tennessee's 8th District in the Twenty-ninth Congress, he served from 1845 to 1847. He did not seek reelection in 1846. Ewing was an 1827 graduate of the University of Nashville, becoming a lifelong trustee there in 1831. That same year he was admitted to the bar and set up law practice in Nashville. From 1841 to 1842 he was a member of the State House of Representatives. After the Civil War Ewing became president of the University of Nashville and played an important role in the founding of Peabody College. He was the brother and sometime law partner of Andrew Ewing, who succeeded him as US Representative for the 8th District. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
