U.S. Congressman. He attended the University of North Carolina, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1820 and proceeded to practice law in Lexington, Tennessee. In 1837, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth, Twenty-sixth and Twenty-seventh Congresses, serving until 1843 and reelected to the Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses, serving (1849-53). Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
