US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served in the US House of Representatives for four consecutive terms from March 1865 until December 1972. He attended Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania where he studied law and graduated in 1842. He was admitted to the bar and commenced practice in his home town of Towanda in 1843. In 1861 he became the president judge of the 13th judicial district of Pennsylvania until March 1865 when he resigned to serve in the US House of Representatives, being elected in the fall of 1864. During his tenure in Congress, he served as chairman of the US House Committee on Private Land Claims during the 42nd Congress. In December 1872 he resigned his seat to serve as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania until 1883, when he was appointed chief justice and served until his death four years later at the age of 68. (bio by: William Bjornstad)
