Lemuel Paynter
Birth: 1788
Death: 1863

US Congressman. Born in Lewes, Delaware, he moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and served in the War of 1812, as a Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 93rd Regiment, Pennsylvania Militia. He was a member of the board of commissioners of the Southwark District for many years as president of the board, a member of the guardians of the poor and as a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1833. In 1837, he was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-fifth and Twenty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1841. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he again served as a member of the board of commissioners of the Southwark District. He died at age 75 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
