Benjamin Franklin Howey
Birth: Mar. 17, 1828
Death: Feb. 6, 1893

US Congressman. Born near Swedesboro, New Jersey, he was a nephew of New Jersey Governor Charles S. Stratton. He rose to prominence as a merchant, and later as a quarryman and slate manufacturer. He join the Union war effort during the Civil War, being commissioned as Captain and commander of Company G, Company G, 31st New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, a nine-months service unit, on September 10, 1862. He then served until his enlistment expired on June 24, 1863. In 1882 he ran as a Republican to represent New Jersey's 4th Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives, defeating incumbent Democratic Congressman Henry S. Harris for the seat. He served a single term from 1883 to 1885, and chose to not run for re-election. He died in Columbia, Warren County, New Jersey in 1893. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
