Ralph Jay Heckel was the son of John Heckel and Olive Bronson.

On December 22, 1913 in Erie County, Ohio, Ralph married Bertha Alma Maag. Ralph was a shovel operator for Kelleys Island Lime and Transport Company. On July 21, 1926, while operating the shovel, he was accidentally killed by a blast of dynamite in the quarry. He was a member of the Evangelical Community Church and the volunteer fire department.

He left behind a widow and four children.
